I guess I understand the sentiment but the first thing I thought was that Lakshmi Bai fell in battle while Joan never actually had to fight, more of a leader role.

Plus religion had a pretty big role in her story. Not sure about Rani Lakshmi Bai though.

From what I know of Joan of Arc, she was captured by Burgundy (the purple franks) during battle and then burned at the stake. And that you failed the scenario if she died.

From what I recall reading, most of the earlier paintings of women were done as per the artists personal choices. The women were never allowed to sit across the artist for potraits etc.

I don't think Laksmi Bai was conventionally beautiful, this is done according to the fantasies of the illustrator.

There's no denying she was awesome, though.

Notice she has no bindi or sindoor. Even though she's dressed in an soldier's garb, her face looks like a typical white woman of the time.

This is what the collective Victorian imagination saw the oriental "Hindoo" woman as, not an actual indian woman.

Nice! If you guys - stressed - want a 'closer' look at her, I suggest this novel called Flashman in the Great Game. It's a really fun story, plotted around the 1857 revolt.
